Birdseye Maple
Birdseye or Bird's Eye Maple refers to a highly figured grain pattern, typically found in Sugar Maple, also known as Hard Maple or Rock Maple. In Birdseye varieties, tiny distinct swirling eyes dot the otherwise smooth grain lines. Resembling burl patterning to a degree, Birdseye Figured Maple is rare and extremely valuable, prized for a number of fine specialty products and uses. Luxury automobiles, fine woodworking projects, and even guitars and bowed instruments make use of this stock. Note that care must be taken when working with Birdseye Maple to minimize or eliminate grain tearout, as the eyes tend to make machining a challenge.
Curly Maple (aka Tiger Strike, Flame Maple, Fiddleback)
Curly Maple describes a grain patterning whereby Maple's wood fibers distort into a wavy, undulating pattern resembling flames or tiger stripes. This figuring is known as chatoyancy, and is highly prized for its amazing almost holographic appearance. Curly Maple varieties are favored by high-end furniture makers as well by luthiers for the creation of fine guitar tops like seen on many a Gibson Les Paul. Curly Maple tends to work much more easily than does its more highly-figured counterpart, Birds Eye.
